IIC programs take children as early as three years old. Children
who have the maturity to pay attention and follow simple instructions
will do well. Children are enthusiastic learners and are taught
by IIC instructors who have experience with younger skaters
and who enjoy interacting with young students. We focus on fun
and celebrating accomplishments.
Figure skates are usually the better choice for a young student.
The flat and broad skate blade will help them acclimate to the
ice more quickly. Students interested in playing hockey can
easily adjust to different skates and take advantage to IIC’s
hockey training programs when the student is ready.
It is not usually necessary to purchase skates for a new skater.
IIC offers rentals of all sizes to get you started. As the child
progresses there are choices for you. You can purchase professionally
fitted skates for figure skating and hockey at the Pro Shop
in the International Ice Centre.
Also, used skates can be a great bargain. Kids grow so quickly
that there are always parents in the same situation as you –
needing to buy new skates and sell used skates. Speak to your
student’s instructor about connecting with other parents
or mechanisms for used skates. You should also ask the instructor
about the proper way to fit your child. As your child’s
abilities increase, they skate needs will become more sophisticated.
Seek advice for your IIC instructor.
IIC, like most arenas, will be in the 45 to 55 degree range.
So, your child needs warm, but non-restrictive clothing, gloves
and a helmet is a good idea, especially for younger kids. And
avoid the urge to put your child in thick, winter socks. Lightweight
socks give the student a better feel and fit with their skates,
and won’t ‘bunch-up’ creating a problem with
comfort or support. |
